The aim of yoga is to realise that we are all connected.  we share one heart, one consciousness, and one Divine source.  yoga's method is to provide us with experiences that help us grasp this.....

Practiced in its correct sequential order, this system of Hatha yoga gradually leads the practitioner to rediscover his or her fullest potential on all levels of human consciousness - physical, psychological and spiritual. Through the practice of breathing exercises (Pranayama), postures (asanas), and proper relaxation (Savasana), we gain control of the senses and a deep awareness of ourselves. By maintaining this discipline with regularity and devotion, one acquires steadiness of body and mind.

'Sthira sukham asanam' - - Patanjali Chapter II vs 46
The meaning of asana is posture.  This Sutra defines posture as sthira - it must be firm, and sukham, comfortable.  There must be physical, psychological and emotional firmness and the posture should be pleasant and steady, without conflict or struggle.  When the posture is steady and comfortable meditation becomes easy.

Pranayama – breathing exercises

When the breathing is steady the mind gives this reflection.
When the breathing is unsteady the mind gives this reflection.
Therefore the breathing should be controlled
