Look After Your Back - a workshop for the spine - with Alison Powell (Anamika)

Your spine provides the main support for your body, allowing you to stand upright, to bend and to twist. In your asana practice, awareness of your spine and its movements allow you to go deeper in your explorations of your body’s potential. In this workshop we will focus on the structure of the spine and how to be mindful of its movements on the mat and in everyday life. The workshop will explore:
* how to maintain flexibility in your spine
* what good spine alignment looks like
* how to find stability in your back
* how a healthy spine promotes a calm and peaceful mind.
In this two-hour workshop you will practice sequences to warm up your spine, including Surya Namaskar (sun salutation), and then move through a series of standing, bending and twisting asana. A healthy spine means a healthy mind, and we will seal the practice with a meditation that encourages you to nurture and love your spine, plus a relaxation that will allow each part of your spine to find a place of deep and soothing rest.
About your teacher
Anamika’s yoga practice goes back to her youth when she followed morning and evening practices from a book her mother gave her. She has practiced in ashrams in India, with teachers in California, Bali and Italy. In 2013 she completed her teacher training with Yoga Prema in Rishikesh and has run regular classes, workshops and retreats ever since. She is also a writer and runs writing workshops in Bristol and beyond through www.writeclub.org.uk.
Her particular interest in the spine stems from her own painful experiences with a ruptured disc in 2009. Finding that the medical profession had only drugs and operations to offer, she began to search for alternatives. As well as deepening her yoga practice, she took a course in Alexander Technique, and began practising quantum healing and yoga nidra. As a result her disc healed and she was able to avoid the impending surgery. She knows firsthand how important it is to look after your back!
