What does yoga have to do with your hormones? Plenty! Just about every yoga posture you do has an impact on the hormonal (endocrine) system in your body – making yoga a fabulous way to support this system. More than this, with a special targeted practice we can keep our hormones balanced and address common symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Ten years ago I came across Dinah Rodrigues when she was around 80 years old. I studied with her, being impressed by her vitality and passion about Hormone Yoga Therapy, how she calls her system of Asanas, Dynamic Movements, Therapeutic Yoga Nidras, Breathing and Anti-Stress-Techniques. I started teaching and I must say - I was amazed by the results.
How can yoga impact the hormonal system? By doing a targeted yoga practice like Hormone Yoga, women can help regulate their cycle, improve fertility, balance thyroid and decrease moodiness, just to mention a few possible impacts. The key is to understand the endocrine system, how it is governed and learn what each gland is doing for us. Hormone Yoga can activate and balance our main regulatory systems: the Nervous System on the top of the hierarchy commanding the Endocrine and Immune System. They all work together to keep us in shape or sometimes even alive, when we suffer from too much stress, unhealthy lifestyle habits or major changes in our lives. How do we recognize when our hormones are out of balance? The symptoms of hormonal imbalance make a long and varied list: weight gain, irregular monthly cycles, PMS, low back ache, low libido, insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, thyroid imbalances, fertility issues, hot flashes, poor immune function, anxiety, depression and blood sugar imbalances, among others. If any of these sound familiar, you are not alone. Many people have come to accept these kinds of symptoms as almost “normal” – just the way things are. But in fact, they can all be linked to hormone imbalances. By the practice of Hormone Yoga we can balance the entire Endocrine System. When the hormones are balanced, many of these symptoms can be alleviated. Does this sound too good to be true? Results In her books Dinah Rodrigues reports how she began her research, sending her Yoga students suffering from Menopause symptoms or PCO-Syndrome, to take Hormone Level Tests before starting the practice and again after a couple of months. As a Doctor of Psychology it was clear to her that they are "merely“ case studies and the number of cases are not high enough to be statistically relevant. Yet, when you read about her findings and start teaching, you are surprised at the shifts, that can take place in a woman’s body just after a few days of practice. I have seen pains go away within one week, irregular or absent periods coming back to normal after a couple of practices, inflamed prostates healing, even unexpected things like an ion-level, that was way to low for 25 years not responding to any kind of treatment - allopathic or holistic - coming back to normal after an eight week course of Hormone Yoga without any other changes in life than coming to class once a week and integrating a few hormone yoga exercises into a daily 30 minute-routine. Of course we cannot guarantee that it will work for everyone but for sure you will feel amazing and energised with these practices. I could write and write about many other cases, babies being conceived, energy levels restored and so on… and of course we never know for sure, what triggered the system to rebalance itself. Only the feedback of the participants, who seem to be sure and assure us, that we are doing something really helpful here and it has worked for them on various different levels in their life, restoring balance and a sense of wellbeing.
